Where Does Chocolate Mousse Come From?
Can you believe that when mousse was first invented it wasn’t a dessert at all? Savory mousse recipes appeared in France in the early 18th century but sweet mouse recipes didn’t come on the scene until the late 19th century. Early sweet mousses used fruit purees rather than a chocolate base, and no one knows exactly when the first chocolate mousse was made.
In the United States, one of the earliest recipes that has been found for chocolate mousse dates back to 1892. However, this “mousse” recipe bears more resemblance to chocolate pudding than a light and airy mousse. It wasn’t until the 1930s and the invention of the electric mixer, that mousse as we know it became possible for cooks everywhere.
