Make-Ahead Keto Cumin Broccoli Mash Recipe
Keeping your keto lifestyle on track sometimes means making meals ahead of time. This make-ahead keto cumin broccoli mash recipe is a perfect way to prep for future dinner success.
A Lesson on Cumin Powder
As common as it is, most people don’t know much about cumin. It turns out there’s a lot to know about this unassuming brown spice.
Even if you’re not the sort to have some stocked in your pantry, you’ve almost certainly had cumin in a dish before.
Cumin is often included in spice blends, such as chili powder, curry powder, and garam marsala.
You can find cumin in North African, Latin American, Middle Eastern, Tex-Mex, and Indian dishes, to name a few.
It comes in many colors, including green, white, and black, although it is most commonly seen in its signature brown.
A drought-tolerant crop, cumin is predominately produced by China, India, and, to a lesser extent, Mexico. Extensive hot summers are required for cumin to thrive.
They start out as seeds, and you can purchase seeds if you’d like. You may need to look at an international market, but sometimes you can find them at your regular grocery store.
You can grind the seeds yourself, or you can roast them before grinding. Just beware that the flavor will be really intense.
You may need to reduce the amount you use in recipes to balance out the intensity.
Whether you buy cumin already ground, or grind your own, it loses its flavor pretty quickly. I use mine a lot, but if you’re an infrequent user of your own cumin you may want to pitch your supply if it’s gathering dust.
Organic vs. Conventional
This one is always up to you. On one hand, there are probably chemicals and/or ingredients you didn’t sign up for in so-called conventional spices.
On the other, in most cases, you’re only consuming a tiny amount of the ingredient at a time. And organic spices are not exactly budget-friendly.
Of course, if money is no object, buy organic and don’t worry about it. You can also look into buying just a small amount of spices from the bulk organic spice bin at a health-oriented grocery store, which will likely be cheaper than what’s on the shelf.
