This iced tea recipe is the answer to sugary processed iced tea from the store. Instead of sugar, it is lightly sweetened with stevia to taste and it has a crisp apple bite from apple cider vinegar. Plus, with zero calories, you can indulge to your heart’s content.

Is Green Tea Good for You?

The scientific evidence says yes; green tea is linked to a host of health benefits!

  • Antioxidants – Green tea is packed with all sorts of antioxidants but one of the most powerful is called EGCG. EGCG is a catechin, which is a special type of natural antioxidant which can protect cells from damage. EGCE has been studied in relation to various heart and digestive diseases and the high concentration of this compound is believed to be responsible for many of green tea’s health benefits [2].
  • Improved brain function – Like coffee, green tea contains caffeine, which is associated with improved brain function in several areas. However, green tea has something that coffee does not have, an amino acid called L-theanine. L-theanine is associated with increased dopamine and GABA, a neurotransmitter with anti-anxiety effects. Together, they have been shown to improve brain function without some of the less desirable effects of caffeine, offering a more stable energy boost [3].
  • Fat burning – In scientific studies, green tea has been found to boost the metabolic rate and the rate of fat oxidation. Scientists believe this may be linked to the combination of caffeine and catechins, like EGCG, found in green tea [4].
  • And more [1].

How to Choose the Perfect Green Tea

With the growing popularity of Matcha, there is more variety of green teas available than ever. Here are three varieties of green tea to try and one to avoid if you are on the Keto diet.

  1. Sencha – This is Japan’s most popular tea. It is bright and grassy and an excellent fit for this recipe.
  2. Jasmine Green Tea – This is not technically a variety of green tea but rather a tea blend, but green tea flavoured with jasmine is very popular and can be found is restaurants across the country. It has a lovely light floral flavor. Make sure you purchase a high-quality blend as many lower quality use artificial flavorings rather than jasmine flowers.
  3. Hojicha – Hojicha (also spelled Houjicha) is often mistaken for its more popular cousin, Genmaicha. However, Genmaicha is not a Keto-friendly green tea because it contains puffed rice, which give it a warm toasted flavor. Luckily, Hojicha is the perfect Keto substitute. It has the same toasted flavor but contains no rice, instead it is the tea leave themselves that are toasted.
